The garden is available for guests'
enjoyment and from which can be seen Buzzards (most days) and
Red Kites (several days per week). Fishing is another popular
pastime in the area, rod licences and permits available in Cenarth,
famous for its salmon, waterfalls and coracles.
There are steam railways at Henllan
(narrow gauge) and at Bronwydd (standard gauge), both on the track
bed of the famous Teifi Valley line that once linked Carmarthen
to Aberystwyth and Newcastle Emlyn. The Vale of Rheidol steam
railway runs from Aberystwyth main line station to Devils Bridge.
West Wales has lots of castles,
some almost habitable and others, like Castell Newydd Emlyn (4
miles away) with its fine river views, are evidence that plundering
buildings for their stone is easier than quarrying!
There is a manufacturing woollen
mill less than two miles away and the National Wool Museum (free
entry) is situated at Drefach Felindre approx 6 miles away. Other
Welsh crafts are prolific, full details being given in the tourist
guides provided for guests' convenience.
NB For all practical purposes, unless you are dedicated
backpacker, your own vehicle is necessary to enjoy a touring holiday
here.
Nearby
attractions
- Cardigan - shopping and historic river port, near to
Poppit Sands
- Carmarthen - with it's own unique history and charm.
There are mailine trains towards London via Swansea plus wesbound
trains to Tenby etc
- Cenarth - fishing, salmon leap, shops pub/restaurants,
river walks
- Aberaeron - small seaside town at the end of the lovely
Aeron Valley
- New Quay - sheltered beaches, harbour views - often of
dolphins, famous for fresh mackerel to take away or enjoy in pubs
or restaurants
- Fishguard - not just a ferry port for trips to Ireland,
but with its own delights in the old town and fishing harbour.
- Lampeter - Wales' oldest university town, en route to
the Cambrian Mountains and Tregaron's Red
Kite Centre
- Aberystwyth - a combination of traditional seaside and
university town, with its old narrow streets, wide promenade,
harbour, cliff lift and main line station.
- Small beaches and coves - there are several villages,
most with toilets, pubs, shops and seals - the nearest, Tresaith
is five miles.
- Places within walking/cycling distance? Of course this
depends entirely on how fit and keen you are! The views are worth
the effort.
- Local lanes - the direct route to Brongest is easy for
walkers and dangerous for cyclists - unless you are an experienced
mountain biker
. There is a Post Office (within the "Smallholding
Centre" our local Estate Agent, which also sells souvenirs)
a public 'phone box, a Chapel and occasionally you may see fruit
and vegetables displayed on a table outside local houses. Coming
back up Salem Hill is another matter! A longer route is available
via Troedyraur Church, which lets you deal with the change in
altitude in easier sections rather than one short hard slog! For
Mountain Bikers, some of our paved lanes are as challenging as
some "off road" venues.
- Curlew Woollen Mill. Once again, it depends how fit you
are. Although not as comprehensive as the National Woollen Museum
in Drefach Felindre you are able to look around the working bits
as well as purchase items for presents etc..
- Bus Services. There are NO regular buses past West View.
There are taxis, but if returning late it will be necessary to
book in advance. Once in Newcastle Emlyn there are buses to Cardigan
and Carmarthen, where there are a variety of services to more
distant destinations - but careful planning is required to avoid
being stranded
